For Immediate Release

The opening Round of the 2024 Honda Sunshine State MX Series kicked off at Hervey Bay Motocross Club with 600 plus riders competing across two days of on track action. The South East Queensland based Series demonstrated a very strong rider base from the Sunshine State that was joined by over 100 interstate entries from all over the Nation, along with the entire Honda HRC Factory racing team and many other top Professional teams and riders.

With day one of the opening round in the books, everyone’s attention was turned towards Sunday’s action out on track as the the Junior lites, MX1 & MX2 Pro, Expert and Clubman classes took to the track.

Honda MX1 PRO

The lineup in the HONDA MX1 Pro Class was nothing short of elite, with numerous Professional teams and riders making the journey to QLD for their first hit out of the season at Hervey Bay. Boost Mobile HRC Honda’s Kyle Webster would take what he learned in Moto1 by finishing second behind CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Dean Ferris and never look back, winning the final two moto’s of the day. Ferris was never far from the rear wheel of Webster, but a second Moto fall for Ferris whilst leading would be enough to tip the momentum in Webster’s direction for the rest of the day.

Todd Waters would use his trademark fitness and endurance to race both Pro classes at Hervey Bay, gritting out come from behind rides to end up third overall. Waters would beat out HRC Honda Racing’s Wilson Todd, along with Kirk Gibbs who showed great speed but first lap crashes and issues would not allow him to show full potential on the day.

Young Jack Mather on the Raceline Husqvarna would impress, battling inside the top 5 numerous times throughout the day during his first outing in MX1.

2nd – Dean Ferris

Motul MX2 Pro

As in MX1, an all star lineup made the journey to Hervey Bay to compete in the Motul MX2 Class. Rhys Budd proved consistency was key to take out the overall victory. Away from Budd’s consistency, the battles on track were intense as Kayden Minear and Ryder Kingsford would lead multiple laps, with HRC team mates Honda’s Noah Ferguson and Alex Larwood claiming Moto wins respectively.

Ultimately in the deep sand it was a day of consistency being rewarded and Alex Larwood would finish 2nd overall after returning from injury, with MX2 rookie Byron Dennis in 3rd overall.
